Bath Open Top Bus Tour
by Abby Searle
On Friday some of the children of the nursery will be going on an open top bus tour of Bath.
The outing is being organised as part of a project about the communities in which each of the children live. During this project the children have been using maps of Bath and the local area to share in their journeys to and from nursery and to identifying what they see as significant land marks.
A small group of children who have shown a deep interest in this project will be going on the open top bus tour with staff from the Discovery Room with the aim of taking photos of the journey and places they see to make a visual map of their community when they return to nursery.
Examples of the children’s work so far can be seen on the learning wall in the Discovery Room, we welcome parents to come in to have a look.
Children In Need
by Abby Searle
Students at Norland College and the children at Norland Nursery have been doing their bit to raise money for Children in Need this week.
The nursery have been wearing their spots and hosting a cake sale all week so that all of the children get a chance to be involved and today they will also be playing all different types of Pudsey games.
The students at Norland College are wearing their pyjamas today, quite a difference from their usual formal uniforms, to show their support and have also been busy baking for the cake sale today.

If you go down to the woods…
by Rebekah Frankcom
You will soon see children from Norland Nursery enjoying Forest School activities on a private piece of local woodland! Norland Nursery already uses Forest School principles in its outdoor space but this will further extend the outdoor experience we can regularly offer to our children. In preparation for the opening our nursery staff will participate in Forest School training to ensure that the children are provided with a full forest school experience.
We are aiming to start taking children from the nursery to the Norland Forest School in January 2012, but we also have lots of other ideas and plans – watch this space for more information!
There are so many exciting things planned for this woodland space including installing a tipi, like the one below.

While we were sad not to have won, we were extremely proud to have been nominated as finalists.
Early Years Students Visit
by Abby Searle
Over fifty students and staff from the BTEC Level 3 National Diploma in Children’s Care, Learning and Development course from Bridgwater College recently visited Norland Nursery. The students spent the morning observing the children in the nursery and talking to the staff about their approach to Early Years care and education.
Clare Crowther, Head of Nursery, has recently completed her BA (Hons) in Early Years Care and Education at Bridgwater College, achieving a First Class Honours. She said, “It was a pleasure to host this visit for the students. Having trained at Bridgwater College myself, it was both exciting and affirming to share in the learning I have completed and transferred to practice. The visit went really well with both Bridgwater and Norland early years students able to engage and discuss the benefits of their training.”
Laura Mitchell, Senior Early Years Practitioner added, “The sharing of knowledge is a really valuable tool for professional learning communities. The students were really enthusiastic to share and explore the benefits of a free flow nursery. They clearly identified the uniqueness of the services and provision we offer - we look forward to welcoming them at the nursery in the future.”
The students continued their residential study tour with a trip to Bath City Farm, a stay in Bath Youth Hostel, and a day of sightseeing all the historical sights of Bath.
Student Lauren Baker, aged 18 and from Minehead said, “I thought the nursery was the best part of the trip; the environment was very innovative with lots of different activities for the children and opportunities for ‘free’ play – it even had an indoor beach, which the children loved! It was also interesting that children of all ages were encouraged to play together, which is quite unusual and different from the nurseries I have visited before.”
Parents Facebook Group
by Abby Searle
Norland Nursery has set up a Facebook group exclusively for parents of the nursery. This group will allow you to communicate with other parents as well as enable us to give you regular updates on the latest developments at the nursery and within Early Years Education.
To join the group, simply log into Facebook, search for the ‘Norland Nursery’ page and follow the link to the Norland Nursery Parents group and request to join!
Due to recent changes to Facebook, as the group is closed to anyone other than parents of the nursery, you cannot search directly for the group.
Play den
by Abby Searle
Norland Nursery’s outside space has been transformed using materials from the local builders’ yard. These materials will be used to encourage forest school*style play and learning, building on children’s confidence, independence, self-esteem and self worth. These activities will add new dimensions to the children’s play and creativity.
The newresources will also form part of a new research project looking at how supported learning affects children’s learning dispositions such as persistence and cooperation.
*“Forest School is an inspirational process that offers children and young people opportunities to achieve, develop confidence and self esteem, through hands on learning experiences in a local woodland environment.”
National definition: by Forest School (England) Network
Forest School is about children and young people building self esteem and independence through exploring and experiencing the natural world.
The ethos of Forest School allows learners the time and space to develop skills, interests and understanding through practical, hands-on experiences. It also allows practitioners to step back and observe the children/young people in order to then encourage and inspire individuals to achieve through careful scaffolding and facilitating.
